Colleges in the District

The Maricopa County Community College District, (MCCCD), which is also known as  the Maricopa Community Colleges, is located in Maricopa County, Arizona.  It is one of the largest community college districts in the United States, serving more than 128,000 students each year.   MCCCD primarily serves students from the Phoenix Arizona metro and surrounding areas of Maricopa County.   These colleges include Chandler Gilbert Community College, Estrella Mountain Community College, Glendale Community College, Gateway Community College, Mesa Community college, Paradise Valley Community College, Phoenix College, Rio Salado College, Scottsdale Community College and South Mountain Community College. They also have two Skill Centers; Maricopa and Southwest.

Programs Offered

The programs offered at Maricopa County Colleges include those leading to a two-year associate degree and occupational certificates. These Colleges provide education to a diverse student body and members of their communities.  The colleges focus their learning through General Education, Developmental Education, Workforce Development, Student Development Services, Continuing Education, Community Education, Civic Responsibility, Global Engagement, as well as University Transfer Education.

Affordability

Those who aren’t able to afford the expense of a state college have the option of attending one of these colleges at much lower tuition rates.  Tuition for the Maricopa County Colleges are just $86 per credit hour.  This is much more affordable to many people who are looking for a higher education.  Part of being a student is researching options to help assist paying for college prior to attending classes. Planning includes researching and learning to understand college resources and opportunities available to aid you in reaching your educational goals.   

Financing

Luckily, there are four options in financing tuition at any of these Maricopa County Community Colleges.  First, you can make online payments, using their Online Student Center.  Secondly, make a payment in person at the college cashier’s office. Third, enroll in a monthly payment plan (Nelnet Business Solutions). And lastly, use financial aid funds such as scholarships, grants, and loans which will all apply to the balance of your tuition and fees automatically when awarded.  In addition, you may qualify for other benefits or waivers used at MCCCD such as Employee Tuition Waivers, Veterans Benefits, Job Sponsorship, and Talent Waiver Scholarships.

Scheduling

Building a class schedule can be one of the most challenging and exciting parts of the enrollment process.  Academic advisors are available at all MCCCD campuses to assist with enrollment and registration for courses that will meet your academic goals.  Please keep in mind that each credit hour registered usually requires about two hours of study time per week.  New college students pursuing a degree, certificate, or transfer program are required to attend a New Student Orientation and meet with an academic advisor prior to registering for courses.  Students will also be required to take a placement exam to provide proof they are meeting certain requirements.  Students whose placement exams indicate development English, reading or math will be required to enroll in a College Success Course.  

Remember not to wait too long to register.  Maricopa colleges have a “no late registration” policy.
